“Little House of the Ferry” is not just a play but an immersive experience.
When you arrive at The Duplex, 61 Christopher St. in Greenwich Village, the atmosphere in the room heralds the fact that you are in for an evening of exceptional entertainment, joy, and humor.
The showroom has atmospheric fog; the walls and the floor are sprayed in a spectacular rainbow of color, and audience members are dressed in costumes appropriate to the play’s theme before the show begins. (Think antlers, my friend!)
From the opening to the closing, there is absolutely no stopping “Little House on the Ferry,” a one-of-a-kind production about Fire Island.
The story opens in Manhattan, where the cast hustles and bustles to the Long Island Railroad, waiting to catch a train to Sayville. From there, they board a ferry for their journey to Fire Island.
With the looming Marriage Equality Votes in the New York Senate, four friends meet up for a weekend of passion, politics, and Planters Punch.
The play moves at an exciting pace with great songs, love scenes, lots of dancing, and a hearty dose of Fire Island humor.
This production is the brainchild of Rob Gould, who has written the book and music, with lyrics by Rob Gould in partnership with Rob Arbelo.
With direction by two-time Drama Desk Award nominee Victoria Rae Sook, the leadership of this busy production maintains a steady hand.
Michael McCrary serves up an abundance of exciting choreography. Quentin Ellis is the music director, and Corey Kline is the music producer. Shawn Lewis designed the set, and Tyler Mark Holland created the fantastic costumes. Lighting by Zach Pizza, sound engineering by Ryk Lewis, and props by Nikaela Baca-Dorton all make for a team that worked well to make this ambitious production come together.
A cast of 13 impressive actors who have participated in productions of “Chicago,” “The Gilded Age,” and “Diana the Musical” includes Charles Osborne, Andrew Leggieri, Troy Valjean Rucker, Christopher Harrod, Gilberto Saenz, Kailin Brown, Manuela Agudelo, with André Jordan, Deon Oliverio, Andreas Wyder, Tym Moss, and drag queen Xana DuMe. They sing, dance, and act in this joyful play about the magic on Fire Island to life.
“Not content with merely spoofing musicals, this ambitious show appears to be spoofing spoofs of musicals. Many scenes are overplayed and underpolished, presumably on purpose. Clichés abound. And somehow, it all works,” wrote David Kennerley at Gay City News, and we find his observation astute.
The show closes soon, Saturday, November 9, 2024. Don’t miss your chance to see it!
