Alas poor vendors and treasure hunters, the annual flea market at the ballfield June 24 was a rainout. But fret not fellow bargain brokers! This event has been rescheduled for July 29. In the interim, I suggest you would-be flea marketees keep your eyes on the OB Bulletin Board. Some of those must-have items may pop up there as would-be flea marketors grow impatient or just run out of cottage space. Could be a chance to grab some sweet deals.
The outdoor dock concert series kicked off July 1 with the rockin sounds of Ocean Beach’s own DJ Rich Schelling of “Shellshock” sponsored by Ocean Beach Moms and You’re My Focus Photography. This is always a crowd-pleasing event and a great opportunity to boogie with the neighbors. The next show featuring DJ Ira is set for July 22.
Beach volleyball has finally been approved by the village trustees with an amendment to the bylaws. Open play at Surfview on the Seaview border has been organized by the OB Recreational Group. Hopefully we will see some tournaments and some challenge games. Mark Miller, inventor of Trangleball, is also in talks to have his game brought to OB after its long exile in Seaview.
OB Rec is offering a number of exciting programs this season including surfing lessons, adult game nights, Teen-swept and so much more. Go to your play store and download Windswept’s new user-friendly app called Windswept Go. The app is also a portal to exchange information and ask questions. Once you download the app, you can delete Patty’s cell phone number.
Pickleball is back at the Fire Island school. Tom Calogero, the Pickleball Tzar, working with Chris Brahe and School Superintendent Travis Davey, has bounced out a schedule that weaves in with the basketball players. Check the app for more info.
Ever wonder where your OBA dues are going? Jim Sozomenu gave a full report at the last meeting. A partial list of investments include: Mobi Mats, beach wheelchairs, water bottle refilling stations, Cake Wars, cat neutering/spaying, directory, rules and regs posters, New Homeowner Brunch, and Butterfly Garden Seed Pods.
JUST IN! Only hours before deadline we learned of an extraordinary event on our beach. According to Nick Stertz, assistant chief lifeguard, one of his lifeguards, Hannah, noticed a surfer apparently in distress. She sprung to action and entered the water. At the same time, a heroic black lab Samaritan also sprung to assist. Witnesses say the owners of the dog unsuccessfully called it back as it swam side by side with Hannah to the aid of the surfer. After determining the situation was safe, K-9 and comrade returned to the open arms of the proud puppy parents.
Regretfully I must share with you, news of the passing of Mike Bobson. For those who didn’t know him well, Mike was the Bench Boy with the dark green sunglasses. He had a quietly dynamic personality and a sly dry wit. Share a memory next time you stop by “The Bench.” Godspeed Michael, you will be missed and remembered.
