Landmarks of Film Music ~ Fire Island School Adult Education Program

July 7 @ 5:15 pm - 6:00 pm

The medium of film and the film score has almost certainly brought orchestral music to more people than any other. Yet this often overlooked art form was for years disdained by the “serious” music world. This music and the composers who write it are finally gaining acceptance as an important part of music history. This course will examine the works of those composers and delve into some of their most iconic scores. From early masters like Steiner and Korngold through such important figures as Bernard Herrmann, Henry Mancini and John Williams, we will examine the changing nature of the score, the way the score enhances the movie-going experience, and how (through soundtrack recordings) film music stands on its own apart from the visual aspect of the movie. This will be an ideal experience for the movie fan who wants a deeper appreciation of film music, or the music fan who wants a better understanding of the important role it plays in the cinematic experience.

Presented by Victor Magnani
