Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses ~ Fire Island School Adult Education Program

July 15, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Reprinted from Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses by Christopher Verga (Arcadia Publishing, 2019).

Moses’s goal to create a four-lane highway out of Fire Island was fought by the community for 30 years. Bounding these grassroots efforts was the guiding idea that the natural beauty with limited access to motorized vehicles was a birthright for south shore residents. Armed with these efforts and guiding ideas, community residents waged a public relations war against Robert Moses, who wielded unchecked political power for decades with no accountability from voters. This struggle between development and conservation ultimately resulted in the creation of the Fire Island National Seashore and the beginning of the end of Moses career.

Christopher Verga, author of “Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses” (History Press).
