“This winter has not been so bad,” they said. “It’s basically over,” so we were told, but Fire Island has other ideas. She always does. Just as we thought we were coasting out of February and into the warm embrace of March with the promise of spring, the beach was blindsided with high winds and coastal flooding under deceptively sunny skies. Adding insult to injury, plunging temperatures overnight that lead to frozen pipes for even seasoned year round residents. (We won’t name names!)
Even beautiful Beth Batkiewicz was caught by surprise when the mid-afternoon ferry out of Saltaire had to be abruptly cancelled due to choppy bayside conditions – but she did not miss the opportunity to take some epic video footage as long as she was at the dock. Teachable moment folks, it isn’t over till it’s over, and don’t let your guard down.
