By Shoshanna McCollum ~ As a house painter by trade, Robert Fasciano knows a thing or two about houses. He also is comfortable with a paintbrush as well. So, it comes as no surprise that he brings these two worlds together in a different way. While there are many South Shore artists who draw inspiration from our iconic Fire Island Lighthouse, perhaps none have the primitive verve his bold, colorful creations take on. Many are painted on vintage sailboat canvas, retired after years of service on the Great South Bay itself – often with the rigging and hardware still intact! How appropriate that the sturdy canvas is now repurposed to depict the structure that has served to keep such vessels safe for nearly 168 years. Aug. 7 is National Lighthouse Appreciation Day. How do you plan to commemorate it?
