Joe Carpenter was often seen around downtown Ocean Beach by his wife’s side. He would be quietly in the background as she campaigned for elected office for herself or when she endorsed a colleague. Joe was proud of his mate, and his quiet presence affirmed that.
Last weekend, on November 16, Joe passed away at Good Shepherd Hospice in Rockville Centre at the age of 81. He is survived by his devoted spouse, Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, his two sons, Richard and Robert, and their respective wives, Stacey and Elisangela, and his grandchildren, Sydney and Joe. His brother James, many nieces and nephews, and other in-laws also mourn his passing.
He was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to his parents, George and Erdine. Joe was a land surveyor by trade before transitioning into the commercial printing business with Angie, as they co-founded AC Type & Printing, a successful business that they grew together.
Joe is also remembered for his coaching days. He coached Little League and youth football and volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, mentoring young minds and emerging athletes.
As Joe’s health declined, he never wavered in his support for Angie. In 2023, this editor keenly remembers having coffee with him during a campaign brunch held at Castaway Restaurant in Angie’s honor during her most recent reelection bid.
“I am Joe, Angie’s husband,” he said to me.
He was good company that day.
His wake will be held at Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip on Thursday, November 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
