The Other Election Races

Most big election races have been counted and sealed for election 2024, but many local votes have closer margins and are much less publicized.

 

In our October edition of Great South Bay News, Skylar Epstein prepared a detailed Election Guide specific to the South Shore Long Island region. Here are the results we know so far:

 

FEDERAL

Kirsten Gillibrand.

United States Senate: Kirsten Gillibrand

The Upstate New York Congresswoman appointed by Gov. David Patterson to fill the U.S. Senator vacancy left by Hillary Clinton upon her appointment as Secretary of State in 2009 has won her third six-year term in office. She won handily over Republican contender Mike Sapraicone by 58% of the vote, over his 41 %. Third-party candidate Diane Sare captured a trace of 0.5% of the vote.

 

 

 

 

STATE SENATE

Andrew Garbarino.

New York’s Second Congressional District (NY-2): Andrew Garbarino 

The Sayville native who witnessed the turmoil of January 6, 2021, as a freshman Congressman who took his oath of office only days before has now won this third two-year term in the House of Representatives. He captured 56% of the votes against his Democratic challenger, Rob Lubin.

 

 

 

 

Alexis Weik.

New York State Senate District 8: Alexis Weik

Another Sayville resident who rose from the ranks, holding her first elected office of Islip Town Receiver of taxes before entering the State Senate arena in 2020, has now won her third term with 66% of the vote over Democrat challenger Francis Dolan with 33%. NYS District 8 covers the South Shore Long Island region from Sayville to Massapequa.

 

 

Dean Murray.

New York State Senate District 3: Dean Murray

Republican Incumbent Dean Murray has won a third term with 57% of the vote over Democrat challenger Michael Conroy with 35%. The NYS 3rd Senate District includes a southern swath of Suffolk County from East Moriches to Fire Island, ending due west at the Brookhaven Town line.

 

Monica Martinez.

 

 

 

New York State Senate District 4: Monica Martinez

One of the lone prevailing Democrats in the local races, Martinez retains her District 4 seat, with 56% of the vote, over Republican challenger Teresa Bryant with 44%. The NYS Senate District 4 runs west of Connetquot State Park, through neighborhoods that include the Islips, Bay Shore West Babylon, and Amityville, north of the Montauk Highway.

 

 

 

 

STATE ASSEMBLY

Joe DeStefano.

New York State Assembly District 3: Joe DeStefano

The Incumbent Republican of Medford maintained his Assembly seat with 56% of the vote, and Democratic challenger Trina Miles with 36% of the vote. District 3 extends west to east from Medford to West Hampton Dunes and Brookhaven State Park to its north and Smith Point State to its south.

 

 

 

Jarett Gandolfo.

 

New York State Assembly District 7: Jarett Gandolfo

Sayville Republican incumbent Jarett Gandolfo won back his seat for another term. his district includes Bay Shore, Brightwaters, Islip, East Islip, Islip Terrace, Great River, Oakdale, Bohemia, West Sayville, Sayville, Bayport, Blue Point, Patchogue, and East Patchogue. He garnered 59% of the vote, in contrast to Democratic challenger Garrett Petersen with 34% of the vote.

 

Michael Durso

New York State Assembly District 9: Michael Durso

Stradling both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, NYS Assembly District 9 South Farmingdale, Massapequa, Massapequa Park, West Babylon, Babylon, West Islip, Brightwaters, and portions of Fire Island and other portions of the Great South Bay area. Republican Incumbent Michael Durso maintained his seat by 65% over Democratic challenger Steven Dellavecchia with 36%.

New York State Assembly District 11: TOO CLOSE TO CALL

The numbers currently make this race between Democrat candidate Kwani O’Pharrow and Republican Joseph R. Cardinale deadlocked at 45.97%. Both men are vying for the seat vacated by the incumbent Kimberly Jean-Pierre, who decided not to seek reelection. The 11th State Assembly District includes the western portion of the Town of Babylon, including the South Shore Long Island hamlets of Lindenhurst and Amityville. There will be a runoff vote for this district.
