Veterans Day on the Great South Bay: A Shout-Out to Some of South Shore’s Own Who Serve

Chief Musician Kristine Hsia

A native of Holbrook, Kristine performs with the U.S. Navy Band Commodores at SUNY Fredonia during the group’s national tour. Chief Hsia is a graduate of SUNY Fredonia. The Navy Band Commodores performed 21 concerts throughout Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, including public and school concerts, connecting audiences to their Navy.

In the spirit of Veterans Day, Great South Bay News would like to thank a few of the local men and women presently serving in our armed forces stationed around the globe.

Chris Olsen, a native of Bay Shore, New York, is a civilian currently stationed at IWTG Gulfport, serving as an anti-submarine warfare subject matter expert for the METOC community.
Olsen graduated from Bay Shore High School in 1986. Additionally, Olsen earned a bachelor’s in operational meteorology from Mississippi State University in 2011.

Seaman Laura Oliver, a native of Mastic Beach, New York, serves aboard USS Barry, a U.S. Navy warship homeported at Naval Station Everett, Washington. She graduated from William Floyd High School in 2023.
