Burning Boat Rescue on Great South Bay by SCPD Marine Bureau
By Shoshanna McCollumSuffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued three people from the water after they jumped off their boat that caught fire in the Great South Bay on Saturday evening, June 6. The three adult men were traveling on a 2001 25-foot Chris Craft from Oakdale to Fire Island when smoke was noticed coming from the engine compartment. They all jumped overboard, wearing personal flotation devices and called 911 from a cell phone at approximately 6:55 p.m.Suffolk County Police immediately notified the US Coast Guard and Fire Rescue and Emergency Services. SCPD pulled the men from the water at approximately 7:15 p.m. The officers then administered first aid for treatment of hypothermia, and then transported to Timber Point headquarters in Great River, where they were checked by emergency medical personnel from Islip Exchange Ambulance. All three refused further medical treatment.The fire was extinguished by fireboats from the Blue Point and Bayport Fire Departments. The vessel is presently in the custody of SCPD, awaiting examination by the arson squad.
