FAIR HARBOR
By Emily “Sunshine” BrafmanRain, Rain go away… If you live in Fair Harbor full-time during the summer and it’s the middle of July, a little rainstorm is a welcome change from the hot summer sun, but not on June 28! We moved out to the beach this weekend and the weather was gloomy and drizzly. As always, we made the best of our weekend and so did many Fair Harbor community members. There are many things to do on a gloomy day on Fire Island. I thought I would give you some suggestions so the next rainy day you can go on your own adventure. The Tomato PatchAfter two weeks off the island we came back to find five rather large tomatoes hanging off the branches of the triplets. They are bright green and look healthy. I repotted them into a substantially larger pot. I installed a tomato rack so I could “train” their vines to grow upward. I have been watering them with Miracle Grow and last week’s rain ensured that the plants were taken care of and nourished. Thanks for babysitting, Mother Nature!Community News:• I want to wish Frank Whitney a Happy Birthday on behalf of the Fair Harbor community. He turned 90 on June 11!• David and Mimoza Frankfurt welcomed their son Henry on Nov. 1, 2014. He is looking forward to enjoying his first summer out at Fire Island.• Fair Harbor’s own June Eisel will be performing in front of Le Dock, at sunset, on July 5, and at CJ’s, in Ocean Beach, on July 9, from 7-10 p.m. She will be accompanied by guitarist John Vop from her band Blues to Blackstreet. Her voice is amazing and she tells me that along with all the best summer covers she usually sings, she is going to be adding some current songs for the young generation to dance to!• Jeff Yapalater wanted me to let you know that his dad, Alvin Yapalater was memorialized on June 27, following his death last week. He was a long-time island lover and is responsible for Jeff’s love of Fire Island.• REMINDER: Saturday, July 4, is our annual Pine Walk Fair. Come shop to support your community and the Fresh Air Fund.Happy summer! Have a wonderful holiday weekend everyone!Email Emily at fairharbor@fireisland-news.com for all your Fair Harbor column news and events.
