Fire Destroys Building at Fire Island Hotel
By Shoshanna McCollumOcean Bay Park, NY – Just prior to the bustling Fourth of July Weekend on July 2, a three-story structure on the historic Fire Island Hotel compound is now destroyed as a result of a fire that broke out at approximately 2:15 p.m.“It was roughly a 100 year-old residential structure that housed hotel staff and the gym,” said Ocean Beach Fire Chief Ian Levine. “Workers and families are now displaced and have lost everything.”The origin of the mutual aid fire is still under investigation at this time. Fire Island Hotel is one of the few oceanfront hotels in operation on Fire Island. Its main building was formerly the Old Forge Lifesaving Station located in Center Moriches, and later transferred to Ocean Bay Park after the station was decommissioned and sold as surplus by the U.S. Coast Guard.Ocean Beach, Cherry Grove, Salatire, Fair Harbor, Sayville and West Sayville were among some of the fire departments that responded to the call. No injuries to civilians or firefighters responding to the blaze have been reported.
