Kismet – Across the Bay with MJ

ON JUNE 23 Rich Mahogany graced Kismet with their music as they celebrated their 10-year anniversary. With past, present and even future band members accounted for, fans packed the courtyard of the Surfs Out and danced into the night.
Following the third set, the band broke into DNCE’s “Cake by the Ocean” and then presented a hand painted cake adorned with their logo which they ordered from ‘Super You Sweets’ courtesy of your truly, Marijane Voltz. Greg Rabin took a moment to thank everyone for our years of support stating: “We are nothing without all of you.” This was the perfect setting in which to celebrate and honor a band that has brought so much happiness to the beach for the past 10 years.
The Bulkhead condos hosted their Opening Ceremonies for the Bulkhead Olympics on July 22. It began that Friday evening with the lighting of the cauldron, as Olympian participants gathered for a cocktail party on the dock of the bay. They took this opportunity to make their alliances and organize their teams.
The actual competition took place on Saturday, July 23 sometime after 3 p.m. with the “wet and wild” portion of the Games. Tom DeCillis, otherwise known as Big Daddy, came in first for the over 18 Cannonball Splash, while Dillion Craig came in first for the under 18 with his super somersault splash.
An Olympian potluck was served on the front deck at 6 p.m. in order to fuel up the athletes for the “high and dry” portion of the Games, which took place that evening. Honey Ruddy and daughter Kristen proved that they were the strongest competitors in balloon pong.
Every team was responsible for creating their own country, making an original anthem and constructing a unique flag. On Sunday, July 24, these items were displayed during the closing ceremonies where awards were handed out. A Bulkhead favorite was the Country of “Emoji People” who were from the “State of Euphoria.” They marched in the Closing Ceremonies proudly displaying their emoji t-shirts and flag. A personal favorite was the royal family of “electrifying personalities” from the country “Voltzenhauffer.” Everyone that survived the three-day ordeal was a winner!
The evening of July 27, Tim Mooney and his Oyster Bay Band played at the Inn. While jamming tunes such as Tom Petty’s, “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” the crowd was on their feet singing along to the classic beats. Barry Pittman was even invited to join in on the fun, spicing things up with his guitar.
Mr. Mooney has been playing with his Oyster Bay buddies for 13 years. They met at an open mic night in Massapequa and have been together ever since. You can catch them entertaining the crowd at the Homestead in Oyster Bay every Wednesday night during the winter months.
On the morning of July 30, the Fire Department hosted their annual Pancake Breakfast thanks to Karen Spollen and Joe Carlton, who graciously volunteered their time to make it happen. All morning there was a constant flow of families and friends showing up to lend their support and indulge in pancakes, strawberries and blueberries that came with the prix fix meal set at $12 per person. There was a 50/50 raffle going on as well, where the winner was told they had to keep their winnings, no givebacks!
Later that day, Pine Walk had their second annual block party. With several houses participating in the fun, decorating their homes with flip flop wreaths and Pink Flamingo’s, the party went off without a hitch. As delicious delicacies were being served from each house, the crowd’s favorite was the Paddy Shack. Sweet Eileen from Paddy Shack gave her neighbors crabs this year. The crabs originally came from good friend MH, and she then passed them along to everyone else. Kismet will thank Eileen for a longtime to come!
While Don and Whiley entertained party goers with their tunes of rock and roll, neighbors enjoyed getting tattooed from princess’ Elizabeth and Charlie.
There was another 50/50 raffle, which moved up and down Pine Walk until a winner was announced. One of the house members from “Make It Happen” won their 50% while the other 50% went towards the Pirate Festival, a fundraiser for Northwell Health Southside Hospital’s emergency room. Pine Walk has proven over the last two years that they are true supporters of the hospital cause.
For all Yoga and Pilates lovers, there are fitness classes being held at the firehouse. Mondays and Fridays you can join an 11 a.m. Yoga class with Stephanie. For the weekenders, Derina will be teaching Pilates on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 10:15 a.m. and Yoga on Saturday and Sundays at 11:30 a.m..
If you are interested in seeing a movie, Charlie Untrecht has stepped up to the plate, offering his time, setting up chairs and running the projector. The three movies that remain for the summer are: “Bridge of Spies” with Tom Hanks airing August 14, “Brooklyn” with Saoirse Ronan showing on August 21 and “Trumbo” starring Brian Cranston airing on August 28. These movies are playing at the Kismet Fire House on Sunday evenings.
