KISMET: Across the Bay with MJ
By Marijane VoltzOn June 13, the Kismet Fire Department celebrated their 42nd annual installation dinner. It was a beautiful evening at the Surf’s Out, as Stew McLaughlin and Dudley Field were celebrated as honorees. The night kicked off with the introduction of guests, the presentation of pins and the installation of chiefs, officers, and truck captains. Congratulations go out to Art Weinstein on his 30-year pin and Buddy Schumacher for his 35-year pin.McLaughlin, who had been ill for the past few months, was presented with a plaque for 45 years of service. Delighted to see that he had the strength and determination to make the trip across the bay, made the night that much more special for everyone.Dudley Field, who recently passed away, was recognized for 40 years of service and for being past chief of the department. His sons, Jim and Scott, were on hand to proudly accept the honor on behalf of their father. On Friday, June19th the committee for the 1st Annual Pirate Festival met in Kismet to discuss the concept of the event. The purpose of the festival is to acquaint residents and visitors with the vital resources that are available on Fire Island, if anyone were to have a major medical emergency. Having recently been designated as a Level II Trauma Center, North Shore-LIJ Southside Hospital has access to a level of care in which a surgeon will be at the patient’s bedside within 15 minutes. Southside Hospital also has world class healthcare and an active helipad available on Fire Island. The festival is already showing signs of success, as all Kismet businesses have agreed to take part in the day’s events. The Kismet Inn will host the best pirate costume contest, the best-decorated boat competition and a rum tasting. The Surf’s Out will host the Rum Runner mixologist’s competition. Beach and Vine will provide a cheese and wine tasting, while the Red Wagon will provide pirate gear at wholesale costs, and the Market and the Pizza Shack will donate soft drinks and pizza to sell at the Rum Runner competition. These are just to name a few of the day’s activities. All of Kismet will transform into “Neverland” for the day, where residents and visitors can enjoy some pirate fun and raise money for a cause that will benefit us all. Please contact Kaitlin Wojnar, at 631-968-3478, for more information, or if you are interested in being a volunteer for the day.KLAW, the Kismet League for Animal Welfare, had their fundraising flea market on June 20 and 21. With a silent auction and flea market items for sale, Alice Nyburg along with Bradlee White, Barbara Winter, Alice Schultz, Helen Zuenzer, Carole Thomas, Dana DeRuvo, Suzie Garrett and Regina English did a fantastic job for a charity that is so close to their heart.Upon entering the firehouse, a rescued toy poodle by the name of Hannibal could be seen comfortably in a bed. Hannibal, who is just 3 months old, was a tortured puppy whose life was spared when a friend of Nyburg’s took him in. One of the missions of the KLAW foundation is to, “end the suffering of companion animals in our society caused by cruelty, neglect, or human apathy.” Visit KLAWFI@yahoo.com for more information.Rich Mahogany played at The Out on the evening of June 20. With weather reports of threatening rain, fans still showed up with their dancing shoes, raring to go. Tim Mooney and his guitar were asked to make an appearance, which was perfect as he was celebrating all three of his daughters’ birthdays, Kelley and twins Morgan and Brittany. Way to go Tim!As the summer starts to pick up momentum and our calendars begin to fill-up, here are some dates that you should keep in mind:The Kismet Inn: Don and Russ will be playing every Thursday evening, beginning July 4.
