Fire Island News welcomes Shoshanna McCollum aboard as our new Editor. She brings fifteen years of reporting experience to the job. McCollum has written for several Fire Island newspapers, and a few regional publications including Islip Bulletin, New York Times Long Island Section, and Boating Times Long Island Magazine. Her work has earned journalism awards with both New York Press Association and Long Island Press Club.“It’s so nice to be back with the Fire Island News again,” says McCollum. “I look forward to many creative challenges ahead.”McCollum is not a native Long Islander. She grew up in Danvers Massachusetts with writers and storytellers from both sides of her family tree. Her mother’s cousins include U.S. Poet Laureate Howard Nemerov as well as photographer Diane Arbus. Her father’s side includes Academy Award nominated screen and radio playwright Norman Corwin, and historic biographer Edward Linn.As Shoshanna Cohen, she first came to Fire Island shortly after graduating School of Visual Arts to work as Curator of the Ocean Beach Historical Society in 1994. Here she met and married long time year-round resident John McCollum in 1999.Shoshanna is the author of two photo-essay history books about Fire Island. Fire Island: Beach Resort and National Seashore released in March of 2012 and a companion volume, Images of Modern America: Fire Island released last June of 2014, both in print with Arcadia Publishing.
